Spring is Here!

Spring is here and its time to head out to get some photos of flowers, baby critters, and budding green!  I feel like I’ve hibernated enough, now its time to take a spontaneous trip to a close destination and head out and see something new.  And do my taxes, I guess.  Still gotta do that.

To encourage the emergence out of the wintry den, I am opening my blog to some photo contributions from my readers.  I am interested in seeing what spring looks like where you are.  The photographs can contain pretty much anything as long as they are not offensive and have a bit of spring in them!  Send the photographs to springtimephoto@journeyoflight.com along with a description, website, return email (not to be publicized), and anything else you would like to add and I will post them here along with a return link.  Unfortunately, I do not have prizes for a contest, but I thought this would be a great way to get us all venturing out and sharing (and a great way to get some link love).

For the concerned, I will state, you retain the copyright, I will only use your photo by permission in one post, I reserve the right to not use the photo, do not send material of which you do not own the copyright, it may take me a couple of days to post, blah, blah, blah, more legal mumbo jumbo here, yadda, yadda, yadda.  If you have questions, feel free to email me at the above link.

I will be posting Springtime photos from you through the end of May so help make this a success and send in your best!  Happy shooting!

The Art of Showing Your Photographic Art

Photography Exhibition

Elizabeth Elliot has recently penned a piece that discusses some of the different aspects of Photographic Gallery Exhibitions. Having exhibited several times before and as one of the contributors, I encourage all to check it out at “The Art of Showing Your Photographic Art: Steps Towards a Gallery Exhibition”.

As a reminder, I do have an exhibition coming up at the Governor’s mansion in Lincoln, Nebraska from July 14, 2010 – August 13, 2010.

Why do YOU photograph?

Big Horn Sheep - Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Cutting through all the discussions of technique, equipment, vision, etc. exists one underlying question: Why?  Why do you photograph?  Well, I can’t really say why YOU photograph, but I can try to answer why I photograph.  Before I do that though, why is the question of why so important?  What motivates us to create a photograph?  What motivates us to create anything?  If we were to look upon the face of a new mother or father we could see the joy, pride, and wonder of their creation.  We revel in our innovation. This motivation is embedded in the DNA of our species.   We are creators.

Some might draw, create music, or paint, or create lego monuments, but for me (and probably for you) photography is the tool of creation that we choose.  So why do I photograph?  I photograph because I’m a visual person.  I learn better visually, I understand concepts when they are illustrated visually, I guess I like sightly things.  The elegance of light.  The contrast of shadow.  The qualities of color.  Telling a story with a picture.  Describing a mood without words.  Conveying feeling through a single image.  To me, this is power that photography holds and why I do it.

Why do YOU photograph?

Feel free to ignore the question, think about the “why” introspectively, or leave some thoughts in the comment section below.
